Greetings!
I wanted to take time out to thank you for your positive thoughts and prayers throughout my journey as a candidate for Mayor in the City of Detroit. As you may now be aware, I was not one of the top-two vote getters in Tuesday’s primary election. When I returned to campaign headquarters for my Election Night Celebration after the results had been reported, I was greeted by cheers, some long faces, and yet still hopeful looks in the eyes of my campaign supporters and volunteers.
When I took to the podium, I stated that, “Tonight, we have no reason to hang our heads in defeat, but to hold our heads high. For what we accomplished together given the resources we had was short of amazing.”
I thanked them and I thank you for your contributions no matter how big or small; they were all instrumental in helping me to spread the message that in the face of impossibility “all things are possible through Christ that strengthens me.”
Though it was an honorable goal to become Mayor of a major metropolitan city in the United States of America, and the world for that matter, like the great city of Detroit; that was not the sole objective. In the process of my running for the Office of Mayor in Detroit, somewhere in Detroit and perhaps across the country in some other urban community there is a little girl who now believes that she can accomplish anything that she puts her mind to; she can become whomever she wishes to become, go wherever she wishes to go and do whatever she purposes in her heart to do. She does not have to accept someone else’s definition of who she is, nor live down to their expectations. If indeed I accomplished this objective, my efforts and yours in assisting me were not in vain.
As a matter of fact, the principle lesson here not only applies to the little girl that I use in the above example, but to every citizen of the city of Detroit and everyone who reads these words. For me, this belief started when I was a little girl and my mother told me that I would grow up to be a “special star.” The fortunate thing is that I believed her and as a result, I will continue to let my light shine.
Yes, there were some tears shed and shared on election night, but as I shared in a Facebook post the following day, ”God will make a way!” — not just for me but for the City of Detroit and for you, if “we” let Him.
Finally, my candidacy may have ended on Tuesday night, but my advocacy to make life better for Detroit continues. Stay tuned for “Lisa Howze Next Chapter!”
In the meantime, I ask for traveling grace as I am in the process of getting on the road to Indianapolis, Indiana to speak at the Indiana State Society of CPAs Diversity Summit where I will deliver the keynote speech after lunch. The topic is,“Defining Diversity: It’s Not All Black and White.”
Much love, many thanks and God’s blessings unto you!
Yours truly,
Lisa
